Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a preparticipation screening tool that helps physical therapists Paul LaRosa and Billy Reilly identify your movement patterns. These patterns may be the first sign that you are at increased risk for injury because of inefficient movements. These improper movements can also reduce your natural performance.

The goal of the screening is to identify imbalances in your body during certain movements and a series of exercises.

What’s involved in Functional Movement Screen?

During your screening, you will focus on seven movement patterns that are involved in your stability and mobility.

The seven movement patterns you go through include:

  • Hurdle step
  • Deep squat
  • In-line lunge
  • Rotary stability
  • Shoulder stability
  • Truck stability push up
  • Active straight leg raise

Billy and Paul are extensively trained in the screening and score your movements throughout the process.

Those scoring lower than 14 on the test are considered at greater risk for sustaining an injury. This screening information allows the therapy team greater insight into how to work with you to prevent those injuries.
